1.3 Tea with Undistracted by Bob Goff
Welcome to Tea with Tasoni, a book club for Orthodox Christians. My name is Laura, and this week we’re continuing our reading of Bob Goff’s book Undistracted.
If you want to grab your own copy and read along, head to teawithtasoni.com for all the details and a link to get your own copy. The latest book is always at the top of the page, and you’ll find an archive to the past books as well.
Last Friday I was dreadfully sick and could not rev up the brain power to record. I’m so happy to be back with you this week.
Now that we’re halfway through the book, I want to shift our discussion from the content of the book to the application of the book.
Ch. 11 Cease Fire: Your thoughts and words matter—let them be lifegiving. To strangers, to friends, to your kids… to yourself. Is it more important to be right or to be Jesus? Where do you have opportunities to speak lifegiving words into others’ lives?
Ch. 12 The Wrong Button: Failure is an event, not an identity. p. 120 Incoming ballistic missile threat. This is not a drill. January 2018. — Bob found and hired this guy. Fell down the stairs but saved the baby… Died on the cross but saved humanity (and rose again). Do you struggle to accept your own failures as part of the journey? (Ch. 14… disappointment is proof)
Ch. 13 Pinocchio’s Nose: Be completely authentic. Be brave, honest, and true to yourself. Celebrate the wins, take the risks, even if the past hasn’t always been kind. Quit merely complying with everyone’s expectations about who you should be. Make a little noise. What would you do with 20 seconds of courage? What would you change, what would you attempt?
Ch. 14 The Misadventures of a Serial Reject: God is in control of everything. When He says no (even multiple times), it’s hiding a different, adjacent yes. God’s got you and you’ve got this. Disappointment is the proof that you’re a participant in life.
Ch. 15 Stop Chasing the Horse: Use what you already have to get what you really need. Stop chasing things and come home to yourself, your family, your God, and begin again from there.
