For Worse...

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress;my God, in Him I will trust.” (Ps. 91: 2)

Today, we tried to get out of our snowy prison and drive somewhere. We got about five feet from our parking spot when two of our wheels spun uselessly on black ice. We couldn't move forward; we couldn't move back. As my husband used a neighbor's shovel to break up the black ice, I thought about the "in sickness" and "for worse" parts of traditional Protestant wedding vows. Every time we hit a rough patch, our wheels spinning, I see my true colors and his. It is those moments that make our marriage: the love we feel, the memories we talk about, the knowing glances. They come out of survival--they come out of the hard times. As long as we trust God in full, we can expect the best outcome. Every time.
