Do Not Love the World
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Little children, it is the last hour..." 1 John 2:15-18aOur verse this week comes from the weekly ending of the reading of the Catholic epistle. No matter what the Catholic (non-Pauline) epistle reading is in the Coptic lectionary, it is always ended with the following: "Do not love the world, nor the things which are in the world. The world shall pass away and all its desires; but he who does the will of God shall abide forever."It seems especially appropriate to remember this as I work to minimize the volume of stuff in my house. Before Lent, I explained my theory for why I have trouble letting go. In the first week, I went through old wedding gifts and let go of my preconceived future. We have a few special posts coming up this week, so stay tuned! And while you wait, enjoy this week's lock screen. Remember to memorize the verse with us and apply it to your life.
